Friday, September 4, 2009Halloween Things!Halloween is my favorite holiday. I start planning my next costume and haunted house and yard theme immediately after the trick-or-treaters have disappeared. Of course, I hardly ever stick to my plan because too many cool new Halloween Things come out every year. After I finished writing my blog last week, I went out to the warehouse to check out the new hair-raising, haunting, horrific Things for this year's celebration of all Things spooky. New Props: No Halloween would be complete without a visit from The Grim Reaper. Watch our video to see this motion- activated ghoul come to life and hear his victims let out blood-curdling screams. I'm going to put him right by the front door to greet those all those who dare enter my haunted domain! This giant rotten, hairy fanged bat is one mean-looking bloodsucker. He has a four-foot wingspan, a gruesome hairy body and a face that lets you know he means business! I'm going to hang one from the ceiling just inside the bathroom so people won't see it until they turn to close the door behind them--and then wait for the screams!![]() ![]() ![]() New Masks: Every year, the mask makers surprise me with new heights in detail and realism. My favorites this year are three frightful faces sculpted in latex with movable jaws. First, a startlingly realistic recreation of the movie character Naagin's serpentine face and teeth. "Vengeance has a sound...hissss..." Great movie. Next up is a Halloween staple as familiar as a vampire: the manwolf. This one is finely detailed, complete with advancing hairline and bloody fangs. My favorite is the Venutian. Once I'd looked at it closely, I realized it was more than a mask, it's a work of art. The detail is incredible from its wrinkled chin to its bulbous red eyes and jeweled forehead. I wasn't planning to be a Venutian this year, but I might have to re-think my options... ![]() New Costumes: My top pick this year (so far) is the gorilla shirt. Creators Zagone Studios even made a video they call "Two Bit Roar" too demonstrate how to be a proper beast! The shirt and gloves are very light and easy to wear and like the other masks, the gorilla's mouth moves with yours for a realistic effect. Next up is the lab monster from Crypt Coat. It's a complete costume from the over-the-head mask to the huge foam shoe covers. The mask is detailed with surgical scars and a look that only a pieced-together laboratory experiment would wear. New Things to Finish Your Costume: The bloody bandage set takes the hassle and worry out of being a zombie, mummy or victim. You get a pre-bloodied arm and leg bandage to finish your costume without making a bloody mess. Of course, making a mess can be fun, which is why I like this family make-up kit, too. Not only does it fit my budget, it fits everyone in the family. You get everything you need to create several different ghoulish characters. It comes with all kinds of gory goo including horror flesh, liquid latex, blood capsules and gel blood. And it also has four different colors of make-up, tooth black and a brush and sponge to help you perfect your creepy effect. We barely gotten started with Halloween here at Things. I'll be watching for more as the year's most heinous holiday gets closer. See you next week, Bobby |
